A Century of Service and Community
The Beginnings
In the heart of Darby Township, within the area historically known as Folcroft, the seeds of what would become the Folcroft Fire Company Number 1 were sown. It all started in Krumm’s truck shed, a modest structure near the northeast corner of Tribbett Avenue (now Folcroft Avenue) and Hook Road. Despite an early setback when the shed was consumed by fire, the community’s resolve led to the construction of a barn on the same property, which served as the first unofficial firehouse.
Founding and Early Years
The year 1903 marked a significant milestone as the firemen hosted a fair to raise funds for purchasing land and constructing a dedicated firehouse. The growth of the fire company coincided with Teddy Roosevelt’s presidency, a time of burgeoning community spirit and service. The company soon relocated to a more accommodating building on Tribbett Avenue south of Hook Road (now Delmar Drive), which also served as a clubhouse.
Building and Expanding
In their new location, the firemen hosted their largest and most successful fair, raising enough funds to erect a building next to the Pennsylvania Railroad between Baltimore Avenue and Folcroft Avenue in 1905. This building was a labor of love, constructed through the voluntary efforts of the firemen.
Equipment and Innovations
The early firefighters were resourceful, converting a wagon to transport ladders and buckets. Initially pulled by the firefighters themselves, they later borrowed horses for this purpose. They also received critical donations from the Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington Railroad Company, including ladders and large iron rings to serve as fire signal locations. A unique signal system was developed to indicate the fire’s location, vital for the quick response necessary in emergencies.
Organizational Growth
1906 was a pivotal year as the fire company adopted its first set of by-laws and initiated the idea of forming the Delaware County Fireman’s Association, fostering better coordination among neighboring fire companies. This led to the formal establishment of the association, with meetings and collaborations that greatly enhanced regional fire safety and response capabilities.
Mid-20th Century Progress
Over the decades, the fire company continually upgraded its equipment and facilities. In 1924, the original truck was replaced with a Ford truck modified to serve both chemical and ladder functions. Significant acquisitions included a 1927 Mack combination pumper and a series of ambulances starting in 1961, which greatly enhanced the company’s operational capabilities.
Late 20th Century to Present
The latter half of the 20th century and the early 21st century have seen continued progress and modernization. Notable events include the purchase of advanced fire apparatus like the 1971 Mack 1000 GPM Pumper and the introduction of modern medical emergency vehicles. The company also transitioned to using more sophisticated communication and alert systems to enhance responsiveness.
Community and Legacy
Throughout its history, Folcroft Fire Company Number 1 has not only been a pillar of safety but also a central part of community life, hosting events and meetings that brought the community together. As we look to the future, the fire company remains committed to both preserving our rich heritage and incorporating the latest in firefighting and rescue technology to serve and protect the residents of Folcroft and surrounding areas.
